The first rule that distinguishes French Roulette from European Roulette is known as the “En Prison” (in prison) rule. In "in prison", every time the ball lands on the zero house, the player who made an outside bet can choose between receiving half the amount of their initial bet, or leaving the amount as a credit for the next play, in an all-or-nothing style, which means he loses if the ball lands on zero or any number other than the one chosen.

If you lose, you lose the entire bet. In this case, it goes without saying that the option of receiving half the stake is the choice of the vast majority of players.
