Is a contest the same as a raffle?
A contest and a raffle are both words used to describe an event where prizes are given away to a winner chosen for skills displayed, via an entry or in a random way. What matters the most to distinguish these terms is how the winners are selected or drawn. A contest is also a promotional drawing in which prizes are given away. However, there is one major difference: unlike what happens with raffles, a contest requires a skill. Participants in a contest will be judged by their entries according to a predefined set of criteria. From the pool of participants in a contest, the best entry is selected to win and is awarded a prize. The criteria upon which an entry could be judged include a skill, such as writing, dancing, drawing, or an arbitrary opinion such as the popularity of an entry among fans. On the other hand, at raffles, no skill is necessary in order to be the big winner, just luck!
